Citing Privacy, Anonymous Source Confirms ID of Anonymous Donor

This is amusing, yet instructive.

NYC Mayor Michael Bloomberg has donated $100 million to his alma mater, Johns Hopkins University. How do we know that? Well, according to the Associated Press, "a person familiar with his philanthropy confirmed the latest $100 million gift on condition of anonymity, citing Bloomberg's desire for privacy."

I don't know if the anonymous source is or is not affiliated with the university, but what is apparent is that the anonymous source--who confirmed Bloomberg's identity as the anonymous donor--is more concerned about his own privacy than Bloomberg's. If the source is affiliated with the school, this is a significant media relations error.
